The Garden of the Five Senses in Delhi

It seems that in large, and busy cities, people take the time to relax more.  Perhaps it is because the must find that time.  I live in a large city, but it seems that people relax alone.  There are not many public places in Phoenix, Arizona where people go to recharge on a daily basis, unless you are talking about coffee shops.  There is nothing in my town that compares to Hyde Park in London, or Griffith Park in Los Angeles, or the Garden of Five Senses in the Delhi village of Said-Ul-Azaib.

The park was created by the Dehli Tourism and Transportation Corporation for Development.  And be it locals or tourists from the Delhi five star hotels, the park and the gardens offer people a respite from the daily grind.  The connection to nature and the 5 senses of one’s body are an important aspect of the ideology of the people and the various cultures of India, and the park was developed with this in mind and of utmost concern.

Since opening in 2003, the park has some to offer each of the five senses all through the year, and is becoming the central venue for the cultural events that are scheduled, be they food and wind festivals, festivals of Dandiya, and garden and plant shows.  Some of the gardens are planted because of the fragrance of the particular flowers, while other are designed based on color and composition.  There are sculptures to touch.

Running streams, fountains and wind chimes create peaceful sounds for ears tired from the noises of traffic.  And there is a food court offering some of the finest cuisine.  The festivals and the parties are fun, but any day is a great day to enjoy the serenity and the beauty.  Many parks are designed with a specific idea in mind, but this one covers it all, sight, sound, taste, smell and touch.  By far one of my favorites I have been to.

New York City Fall Vacation

We just had a very fun and exciting trip to New york City. We were able to get enough time away from work to spend an entire week there. Being that is was October all our friends advised us that we needed to take a drive, even if for one day, up state into the New York Hudson valley or Connecticut. Our friends were telling us that the fall is a spectacular time of the year to travel around that area because of all the fall color. They said they were amazed when they were visiting there a few years back. The colors were bright and vibrant. Sharp brilliant yellows, oranges and fire reds rolling along the hill sides as far as the eye can see.

We got our rooms booked at hotels New York USA and decided we would get a rental car for a two day period while we were there so we can take two days to drive around the state. We were glad we did. One day we drove up into Connecticut along the Long island Sound. It was very beautiful along the water there. Driving through small towns with pre colonial histories, visiting antique and curio shops along the way. We drove through Stamford, Darrian, Westport, Norwalk and ended up in New Haven before turning around and heading back into New York city. The next day we did a similar trip but this time we headed due north on route 9w along the Hudson River. These towns were very similar to the ones along the Long Island Sound, they were of the same age and time period. The scenery along the Hudson was much prettier though. Much of the lower Hudson River is about a mile wide. An impressive site when one takes into consideration that the river runs several hundred to a thousand feet deep and more. We made out way as far north along the Hudson to the City of Beacon. There we crossed the river and headed back to the city on the other side of the river.

Profundity in Palma

One of the more profound moments in Palma and basically on the whole trip wasn’t on the beach or in the clubs. It was in this very cool hostel, where I ended up most days and watched the World Cup games. I couldn’t done this in one of the sports bars or at one of the 5 star hotels in Palma, but I met a couple of great guys, really interesting people and they were staying at the hostel, and I wanted to hang with them as long as I could, and they really enjoyed my company as well.

In the hostel, they had access to washing machines, TVs, a kitchen, two balconies and a bar. We all decided to spend an pre-party event on one of the roomy balconies. As the game of King’s Cup neared an end, we was a flash of a body from the side of the balcony. This captured our attention, so we took a look over the railing and we saw a man bleeding on the pavement. Did he just fall off from above? We were all pretty much mashed with all our drinking, so our thinking was not all to coherent. In the meantime, this man’s eyes were rolling back into his head and there was no sign that an ambulance was on its way. We noticed a piece of railing laying next to his body, one of the guys ran up to their upper balcony and found that the railing was missing, torn away. This was all so surreal and our minds were racing to figure out what was happening. The emergency help and the police did come in a span of 3 minutes, that was pretty quick, but it was too late to save the man.

We were all in shock, about 45 minutes past and no one has come up to talk to any of us. We watched the police disperse the crowd and we just sat there all quiet, we all had nothing to say. This event directly or indirectly effected us. The rest of the night became even more surreal. We all went our separate ways wandering around the city of Palma. It only took a few hours after dealing with our own crazy thoughts that we all ended back up at the hostel. We all hugged each other and decided that sleep who give us relief from this event.

Before I left Palma, I read in the newspaper about what had happened, the police believed that the man was a known criminal in the area of the hostel. Apparently, he had tried to jump from the adjoining building onto the hostels balcony, but the railing gave way. His motive was to steal from all the hostel patrons. This, though, didn’t help me feel any better. It was a very profound event for me. This journey ended up not only being a journey around the world, but a journey of introspection.

Dev Virahsawmy Speaking of Mauritius

Mauritius is a magnificent place, with an amazing history and a fantastic contemporary scene, and there’s surely something here to appeal to world travelers of all ages.  If the beaches don’t get your attention, and it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t, the fascinating island cultures here, the music, or the food surely will.  Mauritius has a mix of African, French, Indian, Chinese, and Creole culture that make it a truly multicultural place, and there’s a lot to learn here.  Fortunately, the learning will come in the best circumstances imaginable, in a place where the only thing that’s necessary to do at any given time, is to relax and enjoy.  It’s a place of amazing splendor, and it’s no wonder that it has such magnificent five star hotels.  Mauritius is hard to beat for the luxury accommodations we offer.

It’s a place where there’s been a long history of trade, so there is a magnificent sense here for hospitality, and you can expect to find some of the finest in the world.  You’ll be falling asleep in our sumptuously decorated rooms and waking up to a sense of exquisite comfort.  After you enjoy a fine meal, or perhaps a workout, you’ll be ready to explore the island.  It’s a rich mix of landscapes that can seem to turn into ideas on lazy and warm days, and you might almost get a feel for the poetry here.  It is a very inspiring place, and has a very rich musical tradition.  There are also some very important works of poetry and literature coming from here, and many of these have been written by Dev Virahsawmy.

This writer was born in Mauritius in 1942, and still lives here, one of the very outspoken leaders advocating for the Creole language on the island.  He calls the Maritian Creole Morisien, which demonstrates part of his aesthetic agenda.  Language is really central in his work, whether it’s poetry or one of the many plays he’s written.  Toufann, his version of the Tempest, is a fantastic demonstration of this, where characters speak in Morisien, Indian languages, or sometimes English, as a way of performing cultural codes and class.  It’s amazing work, and worth seeing if you get the chance while you’re here, or at least picking up a book of his poems to remember the poetry of the place.
