Performance in Singapore

With its consistently interesting urban scene, where the aesthetic seems to run all over the place, but always with an impeccable sense of style, Singapore is one of the most exciting places to visit these days.  There is an intense creative energy here that continues to blossom and build on the efforts of previous generations.  There is also an extremely cosmopolitan sensibility among the art crowd here that stays with the contemporary trends, and very often surpasses the present and seems to have a special mirror for looking into the future.  This makes it a spectacular place for visitors, as there’s always something new and interesting to see in town.

For accommodations, the style and sensibility are very much the same, but the top Singapore hotels also blend the very best of classical Singapore sensibility, for a lodging experience that is extremely precise, precious, and terribly comfortable.  There are many splendid amenities here that keep you from wanting to even set foot outside the hotel, but the view out there is also particularly attractive, so it’s worth a long look.

There are many adventures to be had here, and on a good night, you might be able to catch a new performance by one of its most edgy and consistently interesting young artists, Kai Lam.  He was born here in 1974, and has been a very active member of the performance community since 1995.  Connected to both Artist Village, and World of Imagination, two major initiatives that are still at the cutting edges of international performance, he has worked all over the world, including a Space for Live Art and Asiatopia.  This is a fascinating time for performance in Singapore, and there is enough of a critical mass here that has historically been a perfect moment to begin something rather extraordinary, and the evidence seems to suggest this is already well on the way.

Great Shakespeare Plays in New York

Landon and Amy had been wanting to take a trip together to New York for years. Last summer it seemed as though the timing was finally right and they began to make their plans. In doing so they almost immediately realized some potential conflicts that were arising. For instance, Amy wanted to stay in one of the most luxurious and expensive resorts possible, while Landon preferred to save money on their accommodations use as much of their budget as possible on attractions, food and events. Ultimately he suggested that they flip a coin to determine who got to decide where they were going to stay, but Amy declined and instead decided that Landon was right. His argument that they would be spending very little time in the hotel made her realize that it was way more important to see a Broadway show or two maybe a great concert while they were there.

So, the couple decided on a nice yet cheap New York hotel and made their reservations and booked their flight for late in September. This system suggested by Landon served them well as they enjoyed their first steak dinner in the Big Apple. While they were there the two of them were able to do and see pretty much everything they wished because they had planned their budget wisely. They saw Jude Law in Hamlet and both of them became strong Shakespeare and Law fans after that night. They also got to see Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Ortiz in Othello at the Labyrinth Theater. This was definitely their month for Shakespeare and they felt not only entertained but slightly culturally enhanced. They also went to the Museum of Modern Art and most of the standard yet great tourist attractions. They went to the top of the Empire State Building and had an absolutely time together. Amy was thankful that Landon had such a great budget oriented idea.

Laughter and Merriment in Benidorm

Laughter and Merriment is what the name Benidorm means Arabic. It is the Arabs who named the quaint Spanish village. This town started out as an agricultural and fishing village. The Arabs left their design on the little town with lots of narrow streets. The name has carried this town to it’s true meaning over the past decades. This town has morphed from a hard working town to a super fun and family leisure town. Benidorm is not the place to looking for mega historical sights. It’s the place to take a brake from all the major sightseeing and just enjoy the sun.

After checking into one of the luxury hotels Benidorm has to offer, visitors set their sights on the waters. They not only have the beaches to let their kids play in, they have water parks, theme parks and animal parks. Mundomar Park is where wild life animals can be seen close up. Walk into this park and take in all the wonderful exhibits. You can see playful dolphins and seals or find the tropical animals like parrots. They have many shows daily that feature the individual talents of the animals that live there.

Right next door to the Mundomar Park you will find Aqualandia Water Park.  It’s not hard to get to these parks, the local transportation is pretty good. Aqualandia Water Park is filled with water activities for everyone in the family to enjoy. This is a wonderful place to send the kids out to play and let the adults hang out chatting and sipping on a favorite beverage. There are life guards in and around all the water features so you need not worry about safety. This is a fine way to spend the day in the shade eating lunch and taking in the cool breeze of the Spanish coast.

Biking it in Capetown

I thought long and hard about purchasing a motorbike here in Cape Town, but the reality of it is that I don’t think it will clear customs until next week. There was a public holiday the other day, and the Customs officers have just come off a 2 week strike. So, I eight sit and wait in Cape Town for another week or hire a car or a bike. The latter option, I think is the best one, cause I didn’t come to South Africa to sit in a car. I have a friend here who has a friend the owns a  bike rental business, BMW‘s, which will cost me 1000 rands a day, approximately $200 U.S., so, with with a bit of negotiating, mentioning we have a mutual friend, and treating the owner to one of the best Capetown restaurants, I got an F650 for only 550 rand and I’ll be picking her up tomorrow morning.

I’ll take the bike on a day trip up the coastline to meet up with Rob, the 3rd rider tomorrow morning. Then, the next day, ride along the southern route on the rental, so when my motorbike clears customs, we can head north to Namibia on the motorway. This will take us a full day of solid riding, and hopefully, I won’t pull a Robbie (crash a brand new R 1200 GS rental) as the excess is $2500. At least if I do crash it, I have another one waiting for me at customs. So, all is good.

The next morning, I pulled into Jeff’s (2nd rider) shed with my 600 ks on the BMW rental. We took off and boy did I make that bike work. Mountain passes, traffic jams, shingle roads, unimaginable conditioned roads and motorways. At times, I could’nt stop laughing, the ride was unbelievable. I listened to U2 and Metallica blasting in my Ipod.

Good news! The bike is in Capetown and the shipping agent has already done a pre-customs clearance. Bad news! The bike is sitting in the middle of the bay waiting to be unloaded. Could take a whole other week. Glad I got the great deal on the BMW. Cape Town is a very cool town, but seen enough of it, so I really need my bike riding.

Blue Ridge Mountains Georgia are Part of Greater Appalachian Range

The state of Georgia has an interesting history as well as an interesting and beautiful and diverse geography. Some of the country’s most famous mountains and ranges are located in this state. This includes the vast region of Appalachian Mountains of which the famous Blue Ridge Mountains are a part. Meanwhile the other side of the state features its region of coastland. The Appalachian Mountains are a vast range that spans huge regions in the American northeast. The exact boundaries for the mountain range vary by different geographic classifications, though it is accepted that the majority of the range exists in the United States though it does extend up into Canada.

In addition, the mountain range has undergone vast geographic transitions throughout history and has changed its boundaries and also its make up through the ages. Geologists believe that the Ouachita Mountains in both Oklahoma and Arkansas were originally part of the Appalachian range though they have since been separated by various geologic transitions. An interesting aspect of them, which is due in large part to the great amount of land and various geographic areas they encompass, is their diverse natural features and visual attractions. One of the regions well known for its beauty and natural colors is the Blue Ridge Region.

The Blue Ridge Region stretches from Georgia through Pennsylvania and is well known for its beautiful blue hues that are noticed from a distance. John Denver mythologized this mountain range with his song Country Roads. And while the descriptions within it refer to West Virginia the associations to the Blue Ridge Mountains are felt across its great expanse. Tourists who visit the state and stay in one of the luxury hotels Georgia are certainly aware of this connection and have likely romanticized this beautiful mountain range. They are also an extremely popular trip destination and are visited to numerous people throughout the year.

Finding the Perfect Size, Shape and Design for Hottubs

One of the worst things about this modern and fast paced world is that many people now are feeling the effects of being just too stressed out. This is not only an uncomfortable experience but long term stress will cause a myriad of health problems.  There are ways though, that many people are gaining a handle on this through relaxation techniques.  These techniques are essential in one’s quest for overall optimal health is increasing the quality of life for many people.

Even when your stress is under control, finding ways to relax should still be a practice in everyday life.  Some of the health benefits will include a lowering of blood pressure, the reduction of chronic pain, concentration will increase as well as self confidence and overall happiness.  When one practices this, they will find that the things that used to get to them throughout the day, not longer affect them, the stress is prevented before it even happens.  Hottubs are a great way to relax.  The size and the shape of spas will affect the impact of one’s experience, however the size will affect this more than the shape.  Shape will determine how many people will fit in the tub, and the variety of benches and positions that one can sit in.

The shape will also enhance the entire design of one’s backyard.  But the size will greatly affect the satisfaction one has with their tub and the performance of that tub.  While larger hot tubs and spas will create the space for more people, they are more expensive than smaller tubs, but they will usually have many more jets and a variety of angles, so it may be worth the price for maximum performance and maximum stress relief.  It is amazing the effects that take place with just ten minutes spent in a hot tub.  Immediately one will feel the weight of the world just slip away.  Sleep will come quickly, and one will wake up rested, stress free and ready to take on what the day may bring.

Modesto Symphony and Jazz Concerts

Wally didn’t know what to expect when arrived for the first time in Modesto, California. He had been able to gain an audition for the Modesto Symphony Orchestra and this was his first actual professional orchestra potion possibility. However, he had come from Montana and was not familiar with Modesto or the area. He had only been to San Francisco a few times and Los Angeles once and that was basically all he knew about California cities.

The morning of the audition Wally sat in his room in the hotel Modesto and warmed up. He knew life as a musician would be difficult, however he had played the trumpet since he was seven and had a natural affinity toward classical and symphonic music. He had friends that tried to convince him to play jazz, but Wally just didn’t feel he had it in him. However he loved to listen to jazz music and Miles Davis was certainly one of his idols. While he thought about this he put on his trumpet mute and began warming up with a few phrases from All Blues.

Ironically, Jazz remained on Wally’s mind when he arrived for his audition and felt a temptation to spice his performance with a slight jazz tempo but hoped he had resisted this. And although this was his first change with a professional symphony, Wally felt like he really didn’t care about the outcome. That night he went to Modesto’s State Theatre and saw a concert by David Sanborn. Without any real intention or thought, Wally somehow understood that he would move to Modesto with or without a position with the symphony and he would start experimenting with jazz musicians. And what he didn’t realize at the time was that jazz would eventually eclipse his interest in classical though he would play both for most of his career.

Manhattan’s Central Park is Perfect

Manhattan, New York has so much to offer in terms of culture, cuisine, sights, sounds, sports, history and art. We spent most of our time strolling around the beautiful Central Park. We were amongst marathon runners and stroller moms. We lazed in the great lawn on the weekend just like all the locals.

We tried to get in on some of the free performances offered by the park, but we soon found out when you’re in a city of millions of people, free tickets are sold out as early as 7am for the 7:30pm show. Central Park is really one of the better ways to spend a beautiful sunny afternoon, it a nice refuge from the city, even though it’s right in the middle of the city. We headed back to our Manhattan accommodation to shower and change clothes, we wanted to dress appropriately for the Broadway show we had tickets for, Xanadu. It was really funny, it was more of a spoof on the 80′s movie starring Olivia Newton John. The movie supposedly was a flop, but the Broadway musical was truly quite funny.

We also took the opportunity to appreciate the world renown art on exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. They should not be missed if you plan to stay in New York. These are two world class museums with excellent architectural styles. We considered ourselves very fortunate to actually be able to see the many works by famous artists, like Pollack, Dali, Picasso and Van Gogh. The highlight was seeing the original Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’.

We happened to be in Manhattan on September 11th and witnessed the ceremonies at Ground Zero. We also participated in a Buddhist ceremony. The monks lit floating lanterns and set them adrift on the Hudson River at Pier 40. That was a beautiful sight and very releasing. Back at our hotel, in the evening, we got a remarkable view of the New York skyline and the two intense blue beams of light that emerged from the site of the World Trade Center buildings. That was a perfect way to end our trip to New York.

Possible Casino Over Phuket

The small island of Phuket, Thailand has attracted visitors and tourists for centuries. It is surrounded by beautiful beach land as well as lush green foliage. It share many cultural similarities to the rest of Thailand many of the customs and beliefs as well. Another feature it shares with the rest of the country is the fact that gambling and gaming is illegal there. However, and with a stir of controversy, this may be changing within the next ten years.

It’s not that there are any plans or developing legislation to legalize gambling in Phuket, though there are definitely plans to create a floating city type structure and locate it above Phuket. This has caused great excitement, along with mixed feelings in area and the floating city will include many restaurants, convention and entertainment centers and large luxury resort. There are also plans for it to include a casino, which is the main point of concern for some. It is estimated that the city will not be functioning and ready to open for ten years, which is hopefully time to figure out the details of allowing the casino to exist within it.

Typical casinos are a combination of both gambling tables and games as well as various poker tables. A potential necessary distinction may come with the definition of gambling. Poker is not considered to be gambling in many countries. This is due to the degree of strategy and skill required to win the various games and its non-reliance on luck or random sequences. Many professional poker players have also argued this point for years and have never considered their game to be a gambling game. For many it is also a point of pride. Some standard poker card games include the extremely popular Texas Hold ‘em. This is a variation of seven card stud and is played with communal cards. Whether or not poker is gambling and whether the floating city will have a casino, may take a while to be determined in Thailand. As for now, tourists must be content with a Phuket hotel on the ground.
